Step 1: Preparing the Vinyl Flooring
Our vinyl flooring arrives in large rolls, typically ranging from 8’ to 8.5’ in width, and lengths between 16’ and 30’. Before we begin cutting or gluing, we first roll out the vinyl onto the decking of the boat. We position the vinyl so that the design and pattern are aligned correctly across the decking. At this stage, we visually inspect the layout to ensure the vinyl is straight and centered. It's essential that the design flows in a way that looks professional, so taking the time to adjust the vinyl and make sure it’s properly aligned is key.

Step 2: Applying the Adhesive
Once we’ve completed the mock-up and confirmed the layout is correct, we begin the adhesive application process. For this step, we use a high-quality water-based marine glue adhesive. We prefer this type of adhesive because it's specifically designed to bond well with the marine environment, providing long-lasting adhesion while being resistant to water, heat, and other elements.
To apply the adhesive, we use a ¾-inch nap foam roller. The goal is to spread a thin, even layer of glue over the plywood surface of the pontoons. It’s important to apply the adhesive evenly to avoid any areas where the vinyl could become loose or uneven once it’s adhered. We focus on covering the entire surface, ensuring there are no bare patches left behind.

Step 3: Installing the Vinyl Flooring
Once the adhesive is in place, we carefully fold the vinyl over so that half of it is aligned with the adhesive-coated surface. This process allows us to work in manageable sections. Starting from the front of the decking, we slowly lay the vinyl onto the adhesive, ensuring it doesn’t shift or bunch up as we go.
Step 4: Rolling Out the Vinyl
After positioning the first side of the vinyl, we use a weighted roller to press the vinyl into the adhesive. This step is crucial for ensuring a firm bond between the adhesive and the vinyl, as well as for smoothing out any air bubbles or wrinkles. The weighted roller helps ensure full contact, especially in the areas where the vinyl may have air pockets or high spots.
Step 5: Completing the Installation
Once the first half of the vinyl is in place and properly bonded, we carefully flip over the opposite side and repeat the adhesive application and rolling process. It's essential to keep the vinyl aligned and to avoid any wrinkles or misalignment as the second side is applied. After the entire vinyl sheet is laid, we use the weighted roller one more time to ensure the surface is completely smooth and firmly bonded. Stay Tuned for the next step!
