About Shavehead Lake
Shavehead Lake is in the southeast corner of Cass County, surrounded by forest and rolling hills. It's named after Chief Shavehead, a Potawatomi leader who lived in the area, and that history is still part of how locals talk about the lake.
The water is calm and the lake is wide enough for water skiing and jet skiing without being crowded. Kayaks and paddleboards do well on the shallow ends, and there are stretches of shoreline shallow enough for kids to swim safely. We deliver pontoons here and route from the public launch.
For anglers, Shavehead holds largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike. Mornings are best — the lake fishes well from shore or from a boat, and there's enough cover along the edges to make casting from a pontoon productive. Local fishing tournaments still happen here in season.
Fall is quietly the best time on the lake. Fewer boats, the surrounding forest turns, and the calm water reflects the color back. Worth the drive even when it's too cold to swim.
