Van Auken Lake is in northwestern Van Buren County, in the area between South Haven and Bangor. It's a small inland lake with a mostly residential shoreline of cottages and year-round homes, and limited public access.
Largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and northern pike are the common catches. The lake is shallow enough that the weed beds dominate, which makes the panfishing reliable through the summer. Anglers who know the lake fish the weed lines for bass and work the deeper holes for pike.
For day rentals, Van Auken is a calm-water lake — a good fit for a pontoon cruise, kayaks, or paddleboards. There's not really room for water skiing, and most renters here aren't looking for it.
