About Barron Lake

What people use Barron Lake for.

Barron Lake sits just east of Niles in southern Berrien County. It's a quieter inland lake — calm enough for first-time boaters, big enough for a half-day cruise, and well-stocked for anglers. Locals know it by its current name; older maps still show it as Barren Lake or, going further back, Lake Alone.

The fishing is the lake's main draw. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are common, walleye sit in deeper water, and bluegill, crappie, perch, and northern pike round it out. It fishes well from a boat or off a dock, and ice fishing keeps locals out through winter.

For everything else — paddleboarding, swimming, water skiing, an evening pontoon cruise — the lake's calm conditions make it forgiving. We deliver pontoons to private docks on Barron and route from the closest public launch when you don't have shore access.

Niles itself is worth a stop after the lake. Historic downtown, easy lakeside dining, and a few good coffee places.
