About Lake Chapin

What people use Lake Chapin for.

Lake Chapin is a long, narrow reservoir on the St. Joseph River, formed by the dam at Berrien Springs. It's not a natural inland lake — it's about ten miles of river-widening that runs from Berrien Springs north toward Buchanan, with a forested shoreline and a few small public access points.

The lake fishes well year-round. Largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, and walleye are the common catches, and the deeper basins near the dam hold some of the bigger fish. Anglers who know the lake work the weed lines and the structure near old river channels.

For boating, the water is calm and the lake is wide enough for tubing and water skiing in the open stretches. Kayaks and paddleboards do well in the quieter coves. Sunrise and sunset cruises are particularly worth the trip — the surrounding forest and the river bends give you views you don't get on the round inland lakes.

We deliver pontoons to private docks on Chapin. The drive from St. Joseph is about thirty minutes, and Berrien Springs has gas and groceries close to the lake.
