About Pipestone Lake
What people use Pipestone Lake for.
Pipestone Lake is northeast of Benton Harbor, about twenty minutes from our dock in St. Joseph. The name comes from a soft red stone Native American tribes harvested in the area for ceremonial pipes — the lake was a gathering place long before the cottages and small resorts went up along the shore in the 1800s.
The water is calm enough for paddleboards and kayaks but big enough for jet skis and water skiing without anyone running into each other. The shoreline is a mix of cottages, forest, and small public access points, with picnic areas and walking trails close by.
Fishing is the other main draw. Pipestone holds largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill and sunfish, northern pike, walleye, and a population of catfish that hangs in the deeper channels. Spring and early summer are the most productive — the fish are active and the lake hasn't gotten busy yet.
We deliver pontoons to private docks on Pipestone. It's a good lake for a quieter day if you've already done St. Joseph harbor and want something closer to home base.
